Crystalline methane (CH₄) ice deposited at 10 K onto a thallium bromoiodide (KRS-5) substrate, then annealed at 33 K, and held at 33 K during spectroscopic measurements.

The imaginary part (k) of the complex index of refraction was determined using optical measurements done at a temperature of 33 K, by transmission spectroscopy from 1.133 to 2.608 µm with resolutions of ~6 cm⁻¹ from 0.35 to 2.5 µm and ~1 cm⁻¹ from 2.0 to 2.6 µm.

The accuracy of k is estimated at ± 5%.
