Methane (CH₄) ice deposited at 10 K onto a cesium iodide (CsI) substrate, then warmed up to 20 K, and held at 20 K during spectroscopic measurements.
The real (n) and imaginary (k) parts of the complex index of refraction were determined using optical measurements done at a temperature of 20 K, by infrared transmission spectroscopy from 3700 to 1000 cm⁻¹ with a resolution of 1 cm⁻¹ across the CH₄ features and 2 cm⁻¹ across the rest of the spectrum.
