Ice tholins/ice residues produced from plasma discharge irradiation of ethane:water (C2H6:H2O with a 1:6 ratio) ice precursors representative of cometary nuclei.
Ice mixture deposited at 77 K in a discharge tube, held at 77 K during plasma discharge irradiation, then warmed up to room temperature.
Scrapped refractory residue then thermally evaporated at 500 ± 100 °C and 1E-5 to 1E-6 Torr, and redeposited onto cesium iodide (CsI) and calcium fluoride (CaF2) substrates held at room temperature. Film thicknesses ranging from 0.3 to 7 µm.
The real (n) and imaginary (k) parts of the complex index of refraction were determined using optical measurements done at room temperature, by a combination of reflection at near-normal incidence, multi-angle reflection, transmission, and ellipsometry techniques from 0.06 to 40 µm.
The accuracy of n is estimated at ± 0.01 on an absolute scale and at ± 0.002 on a relative scale. The accuracy of k is estimated at ± 20%, except in regions where k ≤ 1E-2, where the accuracy is estimated at ± 50%.
